Intercropping legumes into stands of Kernza® could reduce nitrogen fertilizer inputs and weed populations. The challenge is identifying perennial legume species that competitive enough to persistent with Kernza®, but not too competitive as to limit Kernza® productivity. The right legume for intercropping likely varies by soil type and climate. We are conducting trials across the Upper Midwest to test various legume species for intercropping with Kernza®. We are partnering with other institutions such as the University of Wisconsin – Madison and The Land Institute to address this challenge. Here is a report from previous Kernza® legume intercropping studies.
