Kernza® and Nitrogen Fertility

Kernza® could be a crop that requires less nitrogen fertilizer compared to annual grains. With its deep, dense root system it’s possible that Kernza® can access more nitrogen in the soil than annual crops with less root biomass. It’s also possible that the Kernza® is more efficient at capturing the nitrogen that’s applied as fertilizer compared to annuals. We are working on measuring these variables of the Kernza® nitrogen budget.
